Larnaca Salt Lake is a scenic area of shallow water. Numerous pink flamingos gather  during the months of November to March. Gorgeous pink birds, often standing on one of their stick legs. Watching these birds make you feel some kind of peace about the world and appreciation of nature.

The lake is the famous home of the Hala Sultan Tekke, one of the most important spiritual complexes of Islam. You can take a relax walk on a hiking trail around the enormous lake. Take your time and enjoy the flamingos and the scenery around the lake. Keep following the scenic path to reach the Islamic complex, which accepts people of all faiths.

Look around the mosque, mausoleum and cemetery to get an idea of the historic value of the site. Find the tomb of Muhammad’s foster mother and hear the tale of her death. Her death allegedly occurred on this very site many centuries ago.

It’s recommended to bring enough snacks and drinks for the trip. You can sit at one of the many picnic tables here and enjoy the serene ambiance. Don’t rush and take your time. Stay into the evening to see the changing colours of the sky at sundown.

Take some memorable photos of the mosque. Wonder across the sparkling white terrain of salt particles in the lake and enjoy the day. For the bird lovers don’t forget to take your binoculars to spot birds, including many other species of birds.

The salt lake dries during the summer and the salt collected was once one of the country’s main exports. Learn about the legend of the curse executed by St. Lazarus on an old lady who refused him water. The salt from the lake is now considered unsuitable for consumption.
