Over the years the castle suffered a great deal from damages due to earthquakes and different battles and was rebuild by the Ottomans in 1590, which is the interesting structure you can see today. The original fort was larger. The subsequent rebuild includes parts of the original fort, such as the two oblong halls of the ground floor. Once inside you can explore the castle’s remains and walk through the ground floor halls down the steps to the prison cells.

The Medieval Museum of Cyprus is located in one of the fort houses. Learn about the history of the castle and see all the unearthed artefacts that they have on display. Some findings have religious significance, which indicates that the castle could have been the city’s first cathedral.

The exact date of construction of the castle is unknown, but is believed that it was built in 1193
