Curium Theatre - Cyprus
Curium ancient theatre – Cyprus is one of the most stunning archaeological sites on the island to visit. In ancient time it was a great city kingdom and today new treasures are still being discovered there. One of the most prominent in this site is the Greco – Roman amphitheatre. While in Cyprus and you are interested in archaeology Curium ancient Theatre – Cyprus is a place you must visit.
The theatre was constructed in the 2nd century BC, but took its current dimensions during the 2nd century AD. Consisting of a semi-circular orchestra that is surrounded by seats of the cavea (subterranean cells). Enclosed to the south by the building of the scaenae frons that must have reached the height of the cavea. Today the only remains are the foundations.
Villas with extravagant mosaic floors and an early Christian Basilica are among the treasures that are found here. This splendid amphitheatre built in the 2nd century B.C. needed a lot of restoration for what we see today. Since its restoration, is used for theatre and music performances.
The house of Eustolios is also found here. It consists of a complex of baths and rooms which contain exquisite mosaic floors from the 5th century A.D. It was once a private Roman villa prior to becoming a recreation centre during the Early Christian period.
The Early Christian Basilica also dates back to the 5th century. Is believed it was the Cathedral of Curium which includes a baptistery on the north face. Wonderful mosaic floors are also found in the House of the Gladiators and the House of Achilles.
