The Archaeological sites – Kato Pafos is one of the most important archaeological sites of Cyprus. The Archaeological Sites – Kato Pahos are globally well know. The site is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list since 1980.
Nicocles, the last King of Palaipafos, today known as Kouklia, moved the city to its present location near the harbour. Between the 2nd century BC and 4th century AD, Pafos was the capital city of Cyprus.
The Park includes sites and monuments from the 4th century BC to the middle Ages. Most remains date back to the Roman period. The amazing mosaic floors Roman villas form the impressive epicentre of the finds, and highlight various scenes from Greek Mythology. These four villas are the houses of Dionysos, Theseus, Aion and Orpheus. Also included are important monuments, such as the Asklepieion, the Odeon and the Agora. In the list are included the Forty Columns, Limeniotissa ruins, an Early Christian Basilica, and the Tombs of the Kings.
Once you are in, you can visit all three houses and all other important monuments. The house of Dionysus is the most important one. It’s the jewel in the crown of Paphos Archaeological Park – a fine collection of well-preserved mosaics. The mosaics are conveniently located under one roof.
When people refer to the mosaics in Paphos, they are usually talking about this place.
A visit to the House of Dionysus you can be amazed with the fabulous mosaics that are absolutely stunning.
The House of Dionysus is located quite near to the entrance of the archaeological park next to the harbour. It stands on its own along the main road to Coral Bay well worth the entrance fee for €2.50 per person. Once inside the protective building the visitor walks on a raised level and looks down onto the mosaics.
It is well worth spending some considerable time looking and marvelling at the mosaics. There are explanation boards above each mosaic to explain what they represent and the story they tell.
There is also a QR code that you can download in order to get an audio guide of the site.
